COURSES

ENGLISH 1 (Required: 9): The first semester deals with grammar usage and composition.  During second semester the literature is devoted to short story, poetry, drama, and nonfiction. 

ENGLISH 4  (12): English 4 is an overall study of British Literature, which includes writing, grammar, vocabulary, reading, speaking and other communication skills. 

YEARBOOK: Prerequisite: Students must be approved through the required selection process. See instructor for details.
Course: Students will work with the latest technology to produce a quality yearbook. They will acquire a comfortable working knowledge of the use of current desktop publishing hardware and software to enhance employment skills and problem-solving abilities. Students will be provided with a workplace-oriented enviroment and a team-oriented, productive experience. Yearbook requires a yearlong commitment and a great deal of out of school time. Be prepared to work hard to produce a quality yearbook! Expectations are high, but this is, after all, YOUR yearbook! This class is open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

ENGLISH 2  (Required: 10): This course focuses on literature, grammar, writing and vocabulary.

COURSES

ENGLISH 3  (Required: 11): This course reviews grammar usage and stresses composition usage and vocabulary development.  The class will focus on the following areas: 
First Quarter:  Persuasive Essays (Persuasive, Motivational, Sales, Order of  Importance, and Position)
Second Quarter:  Position Research Paper
Third Quarter:  Examining Changes, Classification, Comparison/Contrast, Character Analysis, Parody/Satire, Memoir
Fourth Quarter: Pictorial Essay, Oral History, Opinion Poll/Organizational Chart, Genealogical Research/Family Tree, Business Letter, Song Lyric, Senior Spotlight
English III literature is centered on American literature.  Novels will include:  The Scarlet Letter, The Red Badge of Courage, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Good Earth, My Antonia, The Great Gatsby, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

ADVANCED COMPOSITION  (12): Advanced Composition is available for dual credit through Highland Community College for the courses College English 1 (first semester) and College English 2 (second semester). This course will challenge you in ways an English class may not have challenged you before. You will not only hone the tools necessary to be successful in college, but you will read and respond to literature, learn to speak effectively in front of others, research, read for enjoyment, and write numerous papers.

NEWSPAPER (11-12):Prerequisite:  Students must be approved through the required selection process.  See instructor for details.
Course: Newspaper provides students the opportunity to help publish the school newpaper. Journalism standards and ethics are studied and students are required to write stories, conduct interviews, take and develop pictures, and sell advertisements. Students may develop typing skills by typing copy on the computer. Students should be highly motivated and be able to work independently. This meets a technology requirement.

COURSES

PUBLIC SPEAKING  (11-12) Dual Credit through Highland Comm. College The purpose of this course is to increase student understanding
of the principles and applications of public speaking through analysis and practice in the areas of communication theory, topic selection, audience analysis, research, use of support materials, content organization, presentation, and evaluation of a variety of speeches.  Students will present 15 speeches and an interview, as well as a panel group discussion/debate.

FORENSICS/ADVANCED FORENSICS  (9-12): Units will cover finding material, cutting material, practicing, and performing.  Categories of events include poetry reading, prose reading (short stories), solo acting (humorous or dramatic), duet acting (humorous or dramatic), improvised duet acting, extemporaneous speaking, informative speaking, persuasive speaking, and one act plays.  Students will be required to participate at some Forensic Tournaments on Saturdays. This will not count as an English credit for the Kansas Board of Regents Qualified Admissions.

DRAMA/ADVANCED DRAMA  (10-12): Students will cover the history of the theatre, participate in units of acting, directing, and technical involvement with make-up, set design, costume design, and lighting.  This will not count as an English credit for the Kansas Board of Regents Qualified Admissions.
